PSM's wild theory about the PS3!

In the new issue, which I unfortunately have a subscription to, they write an article about how the PS3 might incorporate Blue Ray dvd, or HDDVD (High Definition DVD). There is currently a race to develop the standard for the format led by Sony and others.

What caught by eye was that they think you might be able to record to the HDDVD, thereby eliminating the need for a hard drive! Considering that consoles haven't given the consumer the ability to burn cd's ( and current DVDRW is still a high end feature in pc's) only to rip tracks (ala Xbox), have they lost thier minds? Or is this a real possibility for future consoles?

how would it eliminate the need for a hd? if anything it increases it's need since sony wants us to dl games from the net in the future; yuk!

and dvdrw's won't be high end by the time ps3 is released but it couldn't hurt to include the feature either way.

sony can do what they want. as long as ps3 is backwards compatible with psone and ps2 libraries i'll be happy. everything they add in from there is just value plus imo.

That doesn't make sense at all! With so many advance features, how much do you think a PS3 will cost? Nobody's going to buy a game machine for like a thousand buck!

Keep in mind that the PS3 insnt being released today. Imagine what people would think if you showed them a PS2 ten years ago Technology advances quickly.

Wasn't it PSM that reported Rare was making PS2 games? They had Joanna on the cover.

I bought a PS2 at launch. Then I found out that it sucked. I looked at the release list for games and noticed that nothing even decent would hit for another year. Sad really. In fact, it has taken the PS2 this long just to give me reason to buy one again. Which I did about a week ago. The moral of the story? I said I bought it again right? What happened to my first PS2? Sold it on E-Bay for $800 plus $50 shipping. It truely is amazing, the power of stupidity that is.

I don't think it's funny when a new neighbor moves in and brings the average IQ of the whole neighborhood down...

not funny at all.

Let's play nice now and not turn this thread into an insult war...

Getting back to the subject, what are the hardware features you want in a next-next gen console, either PS3 or XBox2, or Nintendo?

My feeling is that HDDVD definately should be supported, as the HDTV sets are coming down in price and by the time the new consoles hit, should be in the 600 price range at least (at least for some of the bargain models).

How do people feel about PVR? I'm for it, as long as you can play a game and record tv at the same time.

I just want it to play games and not turn into an all-in one solution.. expesive add-ons that I may or may not need I don't want. Anything that really further's the cause is okay in my book (HDD). Also size is important.. I don't want a supercomputer in my living room.

dude with all the ish i hav heard about the ps2....it would be sooo powerful that no developre could take full advantage of the freaking hting....they are just hyping it....its not going to be anu of that. it will improve on the ps2, xbox and gc, but like the other kid said....they arent going to be able to move a system that packed with stuff.....deveolpment costs on the ps3 and the cost of production will be really ugly at this rate. and if they are really using that cell technology, i heard they wont be able to release ps3 until 2006 at the earliest. anyways....that is the bst time to do it...from everything i read the current consoles cant really improve on graphics until hdtv is main stream....its a while aways. ill worry about it when it comes time.

Yeah, Sony said the same kind of nonsense about the PS2. With Microsoft as competition now however, and with the resources to make superior hardware Sony is already starting up the hype machine. It really makes me sick. I enjoy news as much as the next guy, I crave it almost. But I can say that I love the feeling when Nintendo releases new things, they are always so tight lipped about everything that it really builds up your suspense as to what it could be. I've always liked Nintendo's quiet policy. It doesn't put to much hype into the works, and it leaves things for the imagination. If Nintendo sees a certain rumor getting storng before the release of a game or hardware piece, they can work to include rumored things. Sony's PS3 won't be much different than the next jump in graphics, ram, and loading. It will probably be even more of a set top box then X-box or PS2 currently are, but it won't radically change the way the industry is going. And if they do try to be to trastic with something, they may end up dropping the ball like Nintendo did, and with the way Gamecube is building back developer support and Microsoft on their tails, dropping the ball on your next project could have dyer concequences.
