Game Engines

Does anyone know where I can get a free 2D game engine? I've been looking everywhere and can either find ones that cost $ or I find some that really don't exist (span links). It doesn't matter if it's small and simple. I just want to try and make a very basic game and test a few of my programming skills.

Not only 2D, but 3D, and an easy to use coding language as long as you know the basics of.. BASIC, hurhur.

ITs not free, but hey, everything on the net is free if you know where to look. *coughcougheMulecoughcough*.
