Well in most cases where a game became popular on the PC-98 and was worth porting (read: improving), it was done to maintain popularity and name brand interest. That's why not just Falcom but others such as Cocktail Soft made transitions in that sense -- it was the logical thing to do. PC-88/98, in a way, were a good starting point for many companies which weren't as well off financially as others.
