So it's possible an unfinished game is being released and then he make it up in the later sequels -- if he can't get it completed on time that is.

The series could potentially have four or five games.

Shenmue series creator, Yu Suzuki, says the ending of Shenmue 3
will allow for a sequel.

In an interview with French website, Gamersflag, Suzuki confirmed that "the end will be open for a sequel," saying that it wouldn't be possible to finish telling the story with the third installment.

Suzuki has always been keen to make a fourth game and said as much in an AMA on Reddit back in 2015.

"There are a total of 11 chapters that make up the whole story," he said at the time.

"Over the past 14 years I originally planned for there to four or five games to the series. If at all possible, I would still like to realize the full story of 11 chapters."

Shenmue 3 was announced at E3 2015 as a Kickstarter project and smashed a Guinness World Record after getting fully funded in just nine hours.

There's clearly an audience for the series still, 17 years after the last installment, so Suzuki shouldn't have any trouble drumming up interest for Shenmue 4.

Shenmue 3 is being published by Deep Silver and the release has been delayed to the second half of 2018.
