Disposing of Old PCs

I have 4 computers from my college days and early days being a swingin' bachelor. I want to dispose of them, but I don't know how to go about doing that. So, here's what they are:

1. Dell Laptop
2. Bigger Dell Laptop
2. Compaq (ie crappy) laptop
4. HP Desktop Tower

I want to just get rid of them completely and not salvage anything, but I am concerned about personal information and stuff being compromised. I know I could have Googled this stuff, but it would have been generic and not to the point so I am hoping for your help. Thought about yanking the HD out on all of it and smashing it to nothing, but I am not literate enough regarding laptops to know how to do that. So, any help would be great.

Thanks in advance.
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.-Ephesians 2:8-9
