Hardware

Well, black is certainly back, as AC/DC once sort of nearly put it (or Public Enemy, for that matter, but we're getting off the point now). For this generation we have two rather large slabs of dark plastic, one shaped like an early eighties video recorder, the other slightly slanted to give a hint of dynamism. They are monolithic, almost architectural, and they are designed to slide in under your living room TV and then command attention from everyone in the room.

Technically, they are hugely similar: eight-core processors (both reported to be running at a frequency of 1.6GHz), custom AMD graphics processors, Blu-ray drives. But there are some fundamental differences. The two GPUs employ AMD's latest Graphics Core Next architecture, which is divided into working blocks known as Compute Units. The PS4 version has 18 CUs generating 1.84 teraflops of processing power, while the Xbox one has only 12 CUs; which, in theory , gives Sony's machine a 50% advantage in terms of raw shader performance (for example, lighting and other graphics effects). It's never quite this simple because other design and technical elements of the SoC can affect performance, but it's certainly an indication that there is more graphics grunt there for PS4.

Sony's machine also uses 8GB of GDDR5 memory with a bandwidth of 176GB/sec, which should make it speedier than Xbox One with its 8GB of DDR3 RAM (though it commits Sony to a more expensive manufacturing cycle). It's worth reading detailed overview of the technologies at AnandTech, though; the exhaustive article points out that the Xbox One architecture is designed with other considerations beyond gaming – especially implementation with other MS platforms – and this shows in the tech specs.

The full article covers everything. The one thing I will say for the Xbone is that its controller sounds pretty fucking awesome.
The used games market and pricing model for AAA games cannot co-exist, the later being unsustainable while the former continues to grow, according to Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinksi.

Bleszkinski took to Twitter to argue that Sony's announcement that there will be no restrictions in playing used games on the PlayStation 4 may not have been entirely correct.

"I'd bet Sony has some similar stuff up their sleeves, they're just playing on the internet outrage for free PR," he tweeted. "You're all being played!

"You cannot have game and marketing budgets this high while also having used and rental games existing," he added. "The numbers do not work people."

Last week during Sony's E3 press conference, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Jack Tretton's announcement there would be no used games restrictions for the PS4 was met with a standing ovation. Bleszinski argued over Twitter that the used games market is on its way out, and gamers should expect new business models as the industry moves into next-gen.

"The visual fidelity and feature sets we expect from games now come with sky high costs. Assassin's Creed games are made by thousands of devs.

"Newsflash. This is why you're seeing free to play and microtransactions everywhere," he said. "The disc based day one $60 model is crumbling."
By Brad Reed on Jun 13, 2013 at 12:55 PM

Sales of Nintendo’s Wii U console have been calamitously bad so far but the company’s CEO isn’t about to start blaming the rise of mobile games. Instead, AllThingsD reports that Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata thinks that the Wii U has sold poorly because Nintendo isn’t providing gamers with enough top-notch titles to draw them to the system.

“The reason why the Wii U has lost the momentum it had during the launch period has something to do with the fact that Nintendo hasn’t been able to provide a strong software lineup, one game after the other, without too many intervals,” he said this week at E3. “Few people are willing to purchase hardware for the sake of purchasing hardware themselves, so we need to constantly provide the market with software.”

Iwata also rejected calls to follow Microsoft and Sony by developing companion mobile apps to compliment key Nintendo franchises such as Mario and Zelda and insisted that having its games as exclusives to its own hardware is the best way to boost console sales.

“Nintendo has no intention to provide smart devices with our games at all,” he emphasized. “Our IP is the most important asset with which we can attract people to our own platform.”

Iwata’s remarks come at a time when game publishers are starting to shy away from the Wii U due to its poor sales performance. Kotaku reports that Ubisoft, for one, has said that it won’t make any Wii U exclusives until Nintendo figures out a way to sell more consoles.

I'm still pretty shocked at the turnout of games from Nintendo during the Wii U's first post-launch holiday season.

The upcoming Mirror’s Edge reboot will be an open-world game, says Electronic Arts president Frank Gibeau, according to a Eurogamer report. The game is early in development and will run on DICE’s Frostbite 3 engine.

Additionally, EA Games Label head Patrick Söderlund adds that the game will not be turned into a shooter. That said, the game will be a different experience from the original Mirror’s Edge, which Söderlund feels was more about running away.

"The first game was a lot about running away from things," Söderlund said. "And, even though you want to have sections with that, you also want Faith… she’s a powerful character and you want her to take control. You’ll see a little bit more of that in this game.”

He clarified: "Again, we’re not going to turn this into a shooter. On the contrary, in fact. But we are going to evolve Faith and the story. Once we show more of this people will be genuinely excited. I am personally extremely excited about it."

Mirror’s Edge is in development for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The game has no release date yet, or even a release window.

Japan's Securities and Exchange Surveillance Commission (SESC) is investigating Index Corporation, the parent company of game publisher Atlus, for allegedly improper accounting via fictitious transactions. SESC searched Index's headquarters in Tokyo, as well as its president's home, on Wednesday morning.

Index reported that it earned a total of 18.3 billion yen (about US$190 million) last year from console/portable system games and smartphone games. However, according to those involved in the investigation, the company is under suspicion of exaggerating revenues using round-trip transactions.

Index posted a statement on the investigation on Wednesday. The company said that it cannot report on the ongoing investigation until it has gathered the facts. However, it said that it is cooperating with the authorities and will report on the facts as soon as it can. Index noted that it announced on May 15 that it established a fact-finding committee with legal and accounting experts.

Index was established in 1995, and was first listed on the JASDAQ securities exchange in 2004. It expanded into the game industry by acquiring Atlus as a subsidiary seven years ago, and Atlus is now a brand of Index Corporation and its privately held subsidiary Index Digital Media, Inc. Atlus has published many popular video game titles, including the Persona series, the Megami Tensei series, and the Snowboard Kids series.

Been playing this game for the past few days. It's a small little indie game by the company 'The Indie Stone.' The goal is to survive as long as possible in Knox County in a zombie infested world. It's a simple idea and you'll probably just play it for a few hours, starting and finishing it in one single sit down and then challenging yourself to survive longer each time.

Currently the game is £4.99 or $7.80. It's been Greenlit by Steam but isn't available yet. It's still in early alpha so it's very, very rough around the edges.

It's also coming to PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC and Mac, Square Enix announced. All versions will be released later this year.

The Director's Cut, which includes improved boss battles and a visual lick of paint, was announced earlier this year as a Wii U exclusive. Did Wii U's poor sales haul force Square Enix's hand?

"After our Director's Cut announcement we received an overwhelming response from the community asking us to bring this ultimate edition of Human Revolution to other platforms," said Stéphane D'Astous, General Manager of Eidos-Montréal.

"We're thrilled to accommodate that request. We can now say with pleasure, 'You asked for this!'"

The second screen features discussed in our Director's Cut preview and intended for the Wii U GamePad will be available on Xbox via SmartGlass and on PlayStation via Vita.
