i would wait if i were u ... ATI is gonna be releasing the R300 next month so that should drive the prices of all the current vid cards down ... also in sometime in Oct. a company called Trident will be releasing a new graphics card that they claim, has 80% of the power of a GeForce4 ti4600 but costs less the $100 ... that will be interesting to see.

My computer is really old:

Pentium Celeron 400MHz (overclocked to 450MHz)
384MB RAM
GeForce 2 MX400 Video
100GB Hard Drive
Yamaha CDRW 6416

I am planning to upgrade my computer, but I am not sure what I should get. Should I upgrade my current computer or just buy a new one instead? The reason I want to upgrade is because I'd like to use my 100GB hard drive with the new computer.

Any advise would be appreciated.

ITs always cheaper to upgrade than to buy a new PC, since you usually have the main components you ened for a PC anyway. KEep your CDRW, HD, Sound card, Monitorand GFX card and select a new Motherboard, processor and DEFINITELY a good Heatsink. Years ago lowering the heat on the CPU wasn't as vital as it is nowadays. as if you dont get good cooling on your CPU today, it will fry and DIE. :p And in the worst of cases take out your mobo too.

You will probably need new memory as well, as most new mobos need dimms for pc2100 up to pc2700. IF you cant build the system yourself, find a shop that sells all these parts and ask them to set up the system for you, it shouldnt cost you much extra, usually like 15 more bucks or so. Helps if the shop is local so you can jsut leave them your pc and let them do the work. ;)

As for your graphics card, its not TOO bad, though for the new generation of games coming on PC it probably will be quite useless. As other posters said, you might want to wait till prices are driven down, or if you REALLY wanna get the hot stuff, wait half a year for NVidias new cards, which look to beat any existing or future cards by a great deal.

I can't wait for those new Nvidia cards, either!
They will be so powerful!

Doom 3 would work well in it.

Don't even get me started on my monitor...

I'm looking for a really good deal on a 19" true-flat screen.. I was looking at Samsung's DynaFlat 900INF or something bettern than that.. I can't seem to find any good monitor reviews though.. and I don't like purchasing something until I've read countless reviews...

I heard Intel is going to announce a price drop for the entire P4 line, does anyone know the new prices? I was waiting to do an upgrade after the price drop.

Also one question - would you rather get a 17" or 19" monitor? The price difference for the two are less than $100, I am not sure which one to get.
