View Full Version : Broadband speed question.

I know 56k modem download speed is 5kbytes/second. But what about broadband 512K connection speed? Is it in Kilobytes or Kilobits??
I'm guessing it's 50kbytes/second but maybe I'm wrong.

512k would be in kilobits, just like 56k. It would be approximately 9 times faster than a 56k modem. Very few providers offer 512K speed, which would be four megabits per second, or a megaBYTE every two seconds. When I had fiber I could download over a megabyte per second and upload at that speed as well. But I have cable modem and my downloads are stuck at a little over 3 megabits down per second and a lousy (for me) 512k upstream.

I dont know the exact conversion ratio, but its a little more than 50k/s.
I have a 300kbps modem connection, and I suaully get 35k/s downstream out of it.

56k=5k/s, 512k=5-53k/s, 1500k=150k/s etc etc

I got a broadband connection with 512kbits/second but why is my download speed only about 30Kbytes(maximum) per second?
The broadband registration comes with a free ADSL modem.
I don't know how fast the modem is and the box doesn't say.
Does a faster/newer PC increases download speed?

The download speed also depends on the site you visit, if the site is high speed like T3 or Optical fibre, you get really fast connection speed, otherwise you get something between 10 - 100K/sec.

8 kilobits (kb) = 1 Kilobyte (KB).
remember when browsers download, they measure in Kilobytes (KB) and ISP's always advertise their speed in kilobits (kb).
It also depends on what site you are visiting. Not all sites will max out YOUR modem.

My DSL is like 712 or 750, around there. And I get 80K-120K a second download.

I have a Sympatico DSL that connects at 4mbps and I download at 190 k a sec, and upload at 80kbps

190K is a far cry from 4mbps. With a 4mb connection, you should be seeing speeds of around 512K per second.

spider-prime I have a Sympatico DSL that connects at 4mbps and I download at 190 k a sec, and upload at 80kbps
Could it be the modem's speed that's blocking the maximum broadband download speed? Is there a speed difference in ADSL modem like dial up modems(56/36K)?

It wont be your modem. If you think theres a problem just go to your ISP's website and there should be an area where you can test your download speed. Check it out.

it matters what I'm downloading off of, it usually just downloads at that speed for me
I went to one site before and I downloaded at 250kbps and it kept going up
