Meanwhile the PS Move and camera is still around for the PSVR, so Microsoft is really giving up on VR front as well.

Microsoft kills off Kinect, stops manufacturing it

Microsoft is finally admitting Kinect is truly dead. After years of debate over whether Kinect is truly dead or not, the software giant has now stopped manufacturing the accessory. Fast Co Design reports that the depth camera and microphone accessory has sold around 35 million units since its debut in November, 2010. Microsoft’s Kinect for Xbox 360 even became the fastest-selling consumer device back in 2011, winning recognition from Guinness World Records at the time.

In the years since its debut on Xbox 360, a community built up around Microsoft’s Kinect. It was popular among hackers looking to create experiences that tracked body movement and sensed depth. Microsoft even tried to bring Kinect even more mainstream with the Xbox One, but the pricing and features failed to live up to expectations. Microsoft was then forced to unbundle Kinect from Xbox One, and produced an unsightly accessory to attach the Kinect to the Xbox One S. After early promise, Kinect picked up a bad name for itself.

It’s easy to dismiss Kinect as a failed project, but the reality is that the research and hardware has helped Microsoft progress its products elsewhere. HoloLens uses many of the Kinect technologies for depth-sensing, and many laptops now ship with Windows Hello cameras that use the learnings of Kinect to recognize people’s faces. Microsoft is even using some Kinect technology in its latest Windows Mixed Reality headsets.

Apple now looks like the unlikely company to bring Kinect-like technology into the mainstream. The iPhone X, which goes on sale next week, will include depth-sensing cameras to log an owner into the device. The top notch of Apple’s iPhone X is essentially a miniature Kinect, and Apple has used its acquisition of PrimeSense (makers of the original Kinect) to shrink the hardware down to a phone.

Aww... i was always so interested and now it's dead.

No... no, i wasn't. :P

I'm pretty sure VR will follow suit soon enough (in games, cause there are other applications where it can be sucessful).

Honestly this thing was alrady dead the moment when microsoft launched a bundle without the thing.

Or way before when they retired the mandatory check from the console.

That was like at the launch of Xbox one.

Exactly.

Microsoft made a suicide show.

Exactly.

Microsoft made a suicide show.

That's why people say no one ever made a successful third generation console.

Nintendo failed with N64
Sony failed with PS3
Microsoft failed with Xbox One.

SEGA failed with the Saturn aswell.

Funny that.

The Sega Saturn had potential even when it was more conplex to work with than the competition. Those near perfect arcade ports showed an advantage against the playstation.

They also made a suicidal presentation when they revealed the console outside of Japan wich was one of the most stupid decisions that to this day leaves me wondering what the hell were they thinking or if they were thinking at all.

Hey i got a Saturn before i got a Playstation. SEGA games were the best, but alas, they did make mistakes.

Funny that.

The 3rd one should be Sega 32X no? That one also failed miserably.

The 3rd one should be Sega 32X no? That one also failed miserably.

That was marketed as an add-on along with the sega cd in order to extend the Genesis/Megadrive life span for the eventual saturn release. Both failed.

Those two along with Saturn's failure played a crucial role in sega's demise as a hardware manufacturer.

Nah, that was an addon for the mega drive/genesis. Otherwise it would actually be the Mega/Sega CD.

addons never do well. is there any that have?

Can't think of one.

Though i think MS managed to fool alot of people into getting the original Kinect.

Quick google i can see it sold at least 20M.

Compared to the userbase it's not too bad i guess. As far as addons go (i made a funny typo writing this. I typed assons. It rang true though!), it was the most sucessful sales wise.

Kinect was kind of a success on 360.

It was a sales success on 360 but gradually people began to see how unpolished this technology was.

I think the only games that played well with that were about dancing, most outside of that required very precise movements and ample empty space otherwise it will freak out having trouble with detections making patience running short.

Ahahaha. I totally forgot you got it. You didn't even have your Xbox One out last time I visited your home.

Kinect was kind of a success on 360.

I think that is mostly cause it was bundled with the systems when it came out, so most people who bought a new 360, plus the xbox one, probably got it with it.
I rather know how many were from bundles being pushed on people with it and how many were bought by itself.
