Hope it doesn't end up like Atari Lynx.

Atari is indeed working on a new console, says CEO

"We're back in the hardware business" - CEO Fred Chesnais

When Atari first revealed its Ataribox project at E3 this year, the announcement was met with skepticism as to whether the teaser was even real. The company hadn't made a home game console in more than 30 years and yet it was choosing 2017 to get back in the game? Welp, apparently so, because Atari CEO Fred Chesnais confirmed to GamesBeat on Friday that the company is doing just that.

Chesais also revealed that the new product, which has been "years in the making", will include the woodgrain panelling seen in the teaser video though the final design has yet to be determined. He also noted that the hardware will be PC-based. The Atari CEO remained mum on most other details of the project.

Atari has started to regain regain some of its early-80's mojo since Chesnais bought the company out of bankruptcy in 2013. It's already making a profit developing mobile games. What's more, the wild success of the NES Classic edition last winter shows that that the market for nostalgia is a big one. If it can combine the ole timey feels that the 2600 evokes with new titles built on the foundation of its mobile games business, Atari might just give the likes of the RetroN77 a run for their money.

Personally, I would like a Atari console that does play all of their games from all systems, perhaps even ones from other consoles that will never see the light of day again, Colecovisionnnnnnnnn!

If it was an emu box with Lynx and Jaguar games, I'd think about it.

There are so many Atari collections (including for PS4) that it's not really worth it to buy a whole console just for Atari games, unless they put literally every game on it.

Atari’s new Ataribox console will be like an NES Classic, but it will provide classic games and maybe new software as well.

Atari plans to deliver classic games in the Ataribox, alongside “current content.” It’s not clear if that current content involves simply republishing Rollercoaster Tycoon, but it appears that the Ataribox will be similar to the NES and SNES Classic in providing access to old titles in modern retro hardware. While Atari has licensed its brand recently, the company is involved in the creation of the Ataribox. Hopefully that doesn’t mean Atari is just licensing its brand again for a partner to create and manage the hardware.

Atari isn’t providing any more information on pricing, release dates, game content, or even full specs right now. “We know you are hungry for more details; on specs, games, pricing, timing,” reads an Atari statement. “We’re not teasing you intentionally; we want to get this right, so we’ve opted to share things step by step as we bring this to life, and to listen closely to the Atari community feedback as we do so.”

Well hope it doesn't end up like Ouya, no one's giving a damn about that thing anymore.

It'll be interesting if they include remasters of the best games that were launched on this. Like playing asteroids in turbo mode were the things will run way faster than normal and you have to be turning the ship 360 while firing all the freaking time.

Are this bots seriously expecting us to fall in their traps?
