Mario Kart Takes First But Persona 5 Shows Strong in NPD Results for April 2017

The NPD Group released its results for the top selling video game hardware and software for the month of April. Persona 5 had a strong showing, coming in second place.

We already knew Nintendo Switch was April's best-selling console, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe coming in at the top of software sales. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was able to take the top spot in spite of having only been available just 2 days of April.

In third place was The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which last month had sales numbers that exceeded the total number of Switch consoles sold.

Backwards compatibility had an effect on the charts this month, with Call of Duty: Black Ops II coming back from hiatus and charting at number 10.

Just missing out of the top 10 was Lego City Undercover for Nintendo Switch at 13, Horizon Zero Dawn for PS4 in the number 12 position, and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare dropping to 11.

Here are the top 10 best selling games for April 2017, according to the NPD Group:

Mario Kart 8
Persona 5
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
MLB 17: The Show
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands
Grand Theft Auto V
Mass Effect: Andromeda
NBA 2K17
Overwatch
Call of Duty: Black Ops II

The Nintendo Switch helped boost console sales numbers 37% over the same period last year, and strong showings by both Persona 5 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe helped drive software sales, up 6% over last year.

"The industry drove the highest April hardware dollar sales since April 2011," according to the report.
