The Legend of Zelda Producer Suggests the Series Will Be Open World 'From Now On'

Eiji Aonuma has suggested that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's open world structure will become the basis for the series' design going forward.

In an interview with Famitsu (translated by IGN Japan), the Zelda series producer was asked whether the franchise would retain the "open-air concept" used in Breath of the Wild, or would return to its traditional gated dungeon progression:

"From now on," Aonuma explained, "this will probably be the standard form. However, eventually that in itself could become seen as 'Zelda as usual', and we would start to hear opinions this way and that way. This has always been the case, and the result of what we have made is ‘Zelda'."

Aonuma's point is that dungeon progression itself was once considered a new idea, but became seen as the expected style over time, which makes the latest game feel new by comparison.

Breath of the Wild itself was openly influenced by the original game in the series, which aimed to be a world that players could freely explore at a pace they chose. Perhaps we'll see a new take on gear-gating one day.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

I'd suggest that Aonuma has the right idea - Breath of the Wild's world is a major part of why we scored it a perfect 10, calling it "a wonderful sandbox full of mystery, dangling dozens upon dozens of tantalizing things in front of you that just beg to be explored".

Not surprising there is little point in going back now but then again they've always been slightly open.

They'll continue doing this till old fans crave an old school Zelda experience and then they'll release a classic Zelda with a incredible hype train.
