Sweet, that convinces me not to get the Switch online subscription even if I bought the machine.

Nintendo Switch Online Service's Free Classic Games Are Only Available for Limited Time -- Monthly rental games?

Subscribers to the Nintendo Switch's online service reportedly don't get to keep those free games after their window of availability.

According to Wired’s Chris Kohler, a Nintendo of America representative explained that the free classic NES and SNES titles available each month will only be free and playable during that month. That means, according to Kohler, those free games will only continue to be available if Switch users purchase them.

"Confirmed by NOA: Monthly free classic game on Switch is indeed only available for that month. More deets on Virtual Console before launch," Kohler wrote.

For comparison, Sony and Microsoft both offer free games as part of their online services, PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold respectively, which users retain access to while their subscription is active.

We’ve reached out to Nintendo for further details on the matter and will update this story once we hear back.

Earlier today Nintendo commented on its paid online service, saying, “Subscribers will get to download and play a NES or SNES game with newly-added online play for free for a month.”

The Nintendo Switch online service, which doesn’t yet have a name or any price information, includes access to online lobby and voice chat, exclusive deals, as well as the above-mentioned monthly game rental.

The service also lets players find and add friends via a smartphone app. The online service will be free directly after launch, but will switch to a paid service during Q3 of 2017.

So it begins the train wreck.

Surely the next thing they'll announce is that you don't get to keep all the junk you bought on the wii u.

But if you really like nintendo that much then you'll be okay with buying the same game for the 8th time full price.

At this point, I think everyone is used to buying the same games 347 times. Which is awful, of course.

Yeah but in nintendo's case is one of the worst.

They won't do any favours not even to those that supported them during the wii u crisis. I'll be surpised if they actually were willing to give discounts for the games tied to your account.

Luckily I have no interest in the online service of the Switch or free Snes/Nes games. Anything I would want to play I'll emulate it.

I read that the downloaded games will work just like PSN, the only thing that is leaving, is the ability to get them for free after the month, not disappear off your system.
But we will see. If it does end up being you can only play them for the whole month and poof gone, then that will be stupid.
