New DualShock 4 patent suggests Sony is considering a PS4 Elite controller

Last year, Microsoft unveiled a new premium priced Xbox One controller. This Elite controller was all about customization and let users reconfigure it in a number of ways. Despite its hefty price tag of $150, Microsoft had a hard time keeping up with demand. Because of the Elite’s success, many wondered if Sony would ever release a similar controller for the PlayStation 4. Now a patent has appeared suggesting that Sony may be working on an upgraded controller of its own.

On June 16, Sony Interactive Entertainment of Japan patented what appears to be several new designs of the DualShock 4 controller. It should be noted that the original patent was actually filed in July of 2013, meaning that Sony has had these designs laying around even before the launch of the PlayStation 4. Some of the designs seen in the patent filing feature the DualShock 4’s Share and Options buttons set in different places, and other designs have different sized touchpads and grips.

Most of the designs don’t wildly deviate from the standard DualShock 4 we all know, but there is one that stands out among them. This design has the D-pad and face buttons swapping position with the two thumb sticks. Also of note is that this controller design features what appear to be paddles on the inner side of the grips.

I'd buy the hell out of this. I want to get the X1 Elite, but I read a rumor that they are going to let people create custom design models like they are doing for the regular controller.

I don't get it, TBH.

Yeah... i'd rather they let me use the dual shock 2 again. I got the usb convertor but it doesn't work with the ps4. I can execute moves on fighting games so much easier with that d-pad.

The Xbox One Elite controller (MSRP $150) has been selling pretty well (https://twitter.com/XboxP3/status/747882752662331392). People like high end stuff that works.
