18 millions vs 35.9 millions, so PS4 is around double the sales of Xbox one.

With Microsoft no longer planning to share Xbox One sales numbers, other sources are shedding light on the console's performance. Noted Microsoft writer Mary J Foley of GameSpot sister site ZDNet says she has heard from a source that Microsoft has sold at least 18 million consoles.

She shared the number during this week's episode of Windows Weekly, also making clear that the number is unofficial and that she was unable to verify the figure with her source (via SegmentNext).

Foley divulged the figure as part of a discussion about the 200 million Windows 10 number that Microsoft announced this week. Microsoft is including Xbox Ones in this because, as of the New Xbox One Experience update in November, the console runs on a version of Windows 10.

The 200 million figure counts the number of "active" devices.

A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed to ZDNet that "active" means any device that's been "active" in the past 28 days, though it's not immediately clear what that means. Foley added that the lion's share of the 200 million Windows 10 figure accounts for Windows 10 PCs (180 million) followed by Windows 10 phones (1 million-plus), with the Xbox One's reported 18 million making up the rest.

GameSpot has contacted Microsoft in an attempt to get more details about the Xbox One numbers specifically. We'll update this post with anything we hear back.

If the 18 million Xbox One "active" number is accurate, the console's true sales figure may be higher, considering that it's not unreasonable for someone to go 28 days without playing.

Microsoft competitor Sony has been more forthcoming about sharing sales numbers for the PlayStation 4. As of January 3, the PS4 had shifted 35.9 million consoles worldwide; 5.7 million were sold during the recently concluded holiday season.

Xbox executive Phil Spencer previously said Sony's lead is so large that Microsoft may never be able to catch up.

While they have no chance against the PS4, they are still very good numbers overall.

I have one. Day One edition I bought at launch with the PS4. I don't regret buying it as the exclusives they have are fun and worth the cost to me. It doesn't get played nearly close to the amount of times my PS4 does. I still hate the home screen with a passion though.
