Its HUUUUUUUUGE and secret like. What could it be? My money is on them having kidnapped Reggie and plan to behead him unless nintendo promise never to make another E3 show again.

http://mashable.com/2012/06/14/microsoft-media-event-june-18/

Nothing else — and we mean nothing — is known about the 3:30 p.m. event (more details, including the venue, should arrive by early Monday morning), but all indications are that this is not your typical Microsoft product unveiling. In fact, Microsoft is making it 100% clear that this is big:

This will be a major Microsoft announcement — you will not want to miss it.

Surely they wouldnt be that daft. The main market for handhelds in Japan, and we know how much the japanese love their Xbox...

Can't be related to new console. Probably just announcement of some integration. Maybe Kinect-related.

If they are really gonna announce new console, I can imagine Sony will follow suit in 3 weeks or 3 months, tops.

I've read on a whole lot of sites now that it's gonna be a tablet they're making with Barnes and Noble because of the large investment microsoft made with them and their partnership as of April.

Well if you also have read or heard any of this info... it's not true. lol

It's the Microsoft Surface! It's a tablet. lol

They're making sound more like a portable Window's PC. Made of Liquid Metal.

lol the tablet stopped working during their presentation and they had to get another one.

It has its own stand. They're also showing the "smart cover" for it that folds out into a touch keyboard.

Actually I'm interested. I've been a fan of the Asus Transformer since it's a tablet or a laptop. However, since it ran a mobile OS, I was always hesitant. But if this thing runs W8, and I end up liking W8, it would be a great work laptop for me. Too bad I'd have to buy the super expensive version to run W8 (full version) since I'll be needing office, ArcGIS and Adobe CS5 on it.

It'll all come down to price, really. And if I can live with 4GB RAM...

It makes sense for me to be interested in Microsoft products when it's my job to use and write about them. Think about it from your own perspective - if your employer announces a new kind of french fry, surely you get excited too. :D

I didn't say anything about loving it though - haven't held one and don't know enough about them to be that excited yet.

i just can't see this being a success

everyone is going to compare this to a tablet like experience, even though its going to be a full Win 8 OS on it

in saying that, i want one

KingOfSentinels
06-19-2012, 03:37 AM
Well it's a step in the right direction. I dislike tablets because they're not as good as a laptop frankly; my netbook folds up smaller than an iPad to store, can do tonnes more, and was about 1/6 the price. If we're finally getting tablets with full Windows and everything a PC can do, might actually start to pay attention to them.

calintz
06-19-2012, 03:45 AM
well my iPad is not meant to be a laptop/desktop replacement - it gives me ways to consume media, browse the internet and play some games on a bigger screen than my phone when i am away from home

plus i don't need to be sitting down to use it (which i don't really get with this fold up keyboard cover - how does one use that on your lap?)

i hope Microsoft thinks about this instead of trying to cram a laptop-like experience into their Surface - cos unlike most, i like this Metro Windows look and feel, and will probably buy one on launch

same, the only reason I didn't get the Transformer is cause I wanted to wait to see what Windows 8 tablets will be liked, but it seems it will be what I want which is a tablet which is more like a PC. Obviously for the more expensive windows 8 pro version.

The more I read about it, the more I'm finding myself genuinely impressed with it all, much more impressed than I have been with most, or any, new hardware announced by MS or Apple in recent years. The price will likely be the only thing that'd be a deal-breaker for me. I'd of course want the expensive model for what it can do, but might work out just too expensive.

If RT version can do all the Pro and desktop do, I'll get the RT version instead.

I can imagine Photoshop on it will be a fantastic experience. Wacom should be in uneasy state now.

KingOfSentinels
06-20-2012, 04:04 PM
The Surface is pretty fantastic, the more I read about it the more I love it.

I could be sat outside Townhouse (like a Starbucks but better; can get a glass of orange juice, salad, sandwich and bowl of chips for 3!!!) and be playing a game on my Steam account, then maybe put Photoshop on and do some graphics, and then forget I have to do a report first, prop it up on the table, open my files from my memory stick in Word and get that done, then print it off wirelessly, and then slap it back into tablet mode and watch a movie while I go home. :thumb-up: Sounds perfect.

A tablet experience is a limited one, that's why I don't use them; a tablet can do less than my netbook can, and nothing better really. This can, however. This isn't a limited thing. Microsoft finally did right for me with this. Great stuff. As I said though, I'm guessing it'll be expensive so we'll see about whether or not I'm jumping on board.

Badrats Studio
06-21-2012, 01:35 AM
I'm always positioning tablet as a secondary / substitute of my desktop in my home. If Surface brings convenient like I want (remote access to my home Windows server/desktop), I can work (mainly Photoshop ; since we are webcomic team) and play my files at home wherever I want with it.

Sounds like my dream tablet.

not sure how you are going to be running photoshop on the (guessing) limited RAM, professionally

adobe would probably shoehorn an iOS-like semi-photoshop that talks to the photoshop on your desktop

unless you are using remote desktop, which could work... but other tablets have that function

Joe Redifer
06-21-2012, 03:44 AM
I would never use remote desktop-like stuff for graphics critical work like Photoshop. It works by sending a compressed video stream to the tablet (or whatever) of what the desktop screen sees. Compressed video streams and graphics work do not go hand in hand.

Also, will this talk ONLY to Windows computers? If so, that sucks. Apple is forced to have their products talk to Windows and Mac computers and that ability makes their products much better than if they only talked to Mac. MS should make sure their heads are out of their assholes and make it talk with Windows, Mac, Linux or whatever. It would absolutely help sell the product. Or at least offer a computer side app like PS3 Media Server for each type of OS... OUT OF THE BOX.

Yeah maybe the RAM will be limited. We here use Photoshop for comics so knowing that this tablet has the OS that similar with the desktop version very rising our expectation.

something like this (http://www.adobe.com/au/products/touchapps.html) would be more appropriate given the hardware and limitations

regardless of the tablet's OS, you wouldn't want to be using the full suite on a limited tablet imo

in saying that - why weren't you excited about photoshop on android or ios? lol

I am also not sure how one would play Steam games on it. I am not aware of any game that use a touch screen. Or at least none of the 80 games I own on steam do. And I can vouch its near impossible to play PC games even on a laptop track pad.

 Because it's not even a real Photoshop !

Or rather, it can't do what we need to do in our line of work :( Having fully functioning Photoshop in tablet on the go (with a reasonable price tag) really sounds tempting for us as comic maker :)

It has a keyboard at the very least, you can play a lot of Indie games especially on just a keyboard, I'm playing Binding of Isaac right now and don't touch my mouse when playing, and with those USB ports I'm expecting the option of plugging in a mouse is perfectly viable if needs be. The cursor itself could just be controlled using the touch screen too so that's also an option.

It has a USB port, so mouse, real keyboards, and controllers would all plug in and work fine with the high-end version.

spider-prime
06-21-2012, 05:24 PM
not all games will work obviously, but the lower end games probably can easily. But I might be surprised and some higher end games can. But I doubt it. Unless they are going to make something so it will work, like a docking station with a 3d card port.

KingOfSentinels
06-21-2012, 05:51 PM
Well the rumours are, even in the RT version, that it'll have a perfectly capable GPU to handle high-end games. You might not be maxing out Witcher 2 at 1080p and running at 60FPS constantly, or I seriously doubt you will, but it should at least be able to run any game you throw at it perfectly fine, and probably at good settings too. The Pro will likely be a beast too, they can't shove in an awesome Ivy Bridge CPU and not have the GPU match up. That'd be a crime!

And I forgot about controllers, this will work with the 360 controller I'm guessing? I think I'm definitely picking up one of these; everything sounds so good, I'm going to hate it when they announce the price.

spider-prime
06-21-2012, 06:10 PM
even if the price is 600 dollars, I still see it the better choice compared to the ipad if it does let you install whatever windows can.

Reality
06-21-2012, 06:28 PM
I would think if you are out to buy all these attachments there is no point in owning a tablet in the first place. Surely there are comparable laptops that would offer a similar package for the same price. Maybe even with stronger batteries.

spider-prime
06-21-2012, 07:12 PM
But they can do like the transformer has and make a better keyboard for it with a battery built in and even a DVD drive and more ports. That is what I'm expecting.

I like the idea of a tablet, but the tablets out so far have all been crappy. yes even the ipad is crappy cause it's so limited and you shouldn't have to jailbreak things to get the most out of it.

eastx
06-21-2012, 08:50 PM
Plugging in peripherals would just be to make life easier when you're at home or somewhere else that it makes sense to use them.

The high-end model will cost at least $1000, I bet.

calintz

Weary? Yeah I would agree. I imagine it'll still be a sell out launch. People just love new toys. As long as they are happy in the present they'll forget about the crap they went through in the past to get here.
