Which means the rumor of a new "Disc format" could be real.

If you are one of those problem 360 users, MS will give you a new Slim 360 with a 250 gig HDD FOR FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Sweet deal if you ask me. I might go buy one from a used store for 50 bucks and see if the update makes it not work anymore. :)

I am hoping the update kills my 360 just for that reason.

If I snap my Xbox in half and take it to Microsoft saying it won't read discs anymore, think I could get myself one of those Slim 360s?

It could work!

Doesn't hurt to try!

Sweet! Is this system-breaking update available now? My 360 is pretty old but still works.

I think it is. I couldn't tell you since I don't own a 360 but people are complaining about it.

I just turned mine on and it didn't request that I update it. However I did update it about 4 weeks or so ago. Was that the update? I haven't turned the thing on for many, many months before that so I have no idea when that update was issued.

I believe the update is still in beta. I'm in the beta, actually. Most people's 360s will work fine with the new disc format (which adds 1 GB of usable space to discs while strengthening anti-piracy measures), but it's rad that Microsoft will hook up the people who have problems.

found the update launch date, it's May 19th. So tomorrow.

Joe Redifer

What else does the update do?

What else does the update do?

Nothing that I've seen.

Never have I wished for my Xbox 360 to be broken as much as now. Ever since I had it, I've been doing my best to make sure it doesn't break. The most effective method I found was to never use it, ever. That's the only way to be sure it works. I'm going to upgrade tomorrow and if it loads a game I will be pissed!

By the way, have you beta guys tried the new bigger discs or just the update itself?

I think they got Halo Reach on the new disc format and had to play it.

Yep, a free copy of Halo Reach with no case...

So how will I know if my Xbox is broken? Will it not work with ANY discs, or just the newfangled discs?

Escaflowne2001

All discs from what I've seen the net.

Yup. It will effectively bork the firmware on your drive, so it shouldn't be able to read anything if you're effected.

If you're still reading games just fine, then you have nothing to worry about.

MS said It got nothing to do with this update, so no new 360 for you unless you got one of the emails telling you're getting a new xbox.

Update: Microsoft has responded, confirming that the earlier statement was incorrect and this is not related to the update being beta tested. If you're wondering how many people are in for a swap, all we could find out is that something less than 10,000 of the 50 million or so Xbox 360s sold worldwide are affected. Check after the break for the official word, but if you have one of the boxes and are connected to XBL you should expect to receive a notice in your email.

They are adding Paypal option to pay with.

New Xbox 360 System Update Brings Expanded PayPal Functionality

I am happy to announce that, as a part of a new Xbox 360 System Update, we’re expanding our integration with PayPal to allow U.S. and international Xbox LIVE users to make purchases on their Xbox 360 consoles with their PayPal accounts.* Once you’ve linked your PayPal account to your Xbox LIVE account on Xbox.com, you’ll be off and running to use it as a billing option, allowing you to buy content such as Microsoft Points, Xbox LIVE Gold subscriptions and Games on Demand titles.

We are rolling out the Xbox 360 System Update gradually to all Xbox LIVE users starting today and throughout the next couple weeks to ensure a high quality deployment. Just like any other update to our service, you will know you’ve received it when you turn on your Xbox 360 console, connect to Xbox LIVE and receive a notification to download the update. It’s important to note that it may take a few days to make its way around the globe. Thanks for your patience if you don’t get it right away!

This particular update will also bring an auto-standby feature that places your console on standby if it’s idle for more than one hour, helping to reduce power consumption. This feature will be automatically enabled after you download the update. You can change this setting in the System Settings on your console.

Finally, thank you to all who participated in the preview program for this Xbox 360 System Update. Your contributions helped us prepare for the updated Xbox 360 disc format capability that comes with this release.

*PayPal functionality will not be available in the following Xbox LIVE regions: Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Czech Republic, Finland, Greece, Hungary, India, Japan, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan

Paypal is a nice addition. :smile2:

Last thing I would ever do is let Microsoft have my pay pal password. Ever tried to remove a credit card? Impossible. They also have a tendancy to change your settings in regards to auto-renew. They fucked me over with that twice even though I set it up on my xbox profile and even called the fuckers at the 800 number. Don't do it folks. Learn the lesson to be learned from Sony and just use those dumb little cards.

Escaflowne2001

I doubt you would give Microsoft your paypal details. I would imagine it links to paypals website during the payment like it does everywhere else. That's the whole point of using it.

I wouldn't put anything past microsoft.

Escaflowne2001

Well I'm assuming there suddenly adding paypal has something to do with the PSN problems and giving people who are worried about putting there credit card data on PSN/XBLive a alternative. So I'd imagine they'll do it that way...

Expect Sony to follow aswell after a while.

I'd be a lot happier if they did away with that stupid point system all together and went with the wallet like Sony and Steam.

My X360 stopped reading discs and wouldn't even start up most of the time. Sometimes I could get it to work but the game would freeze. Finally, I got the dreaded "red ring of death," so I had to get a new X360. *sigh*

Wasn't it supposed to have started yesterday? I'm leaving tomorrow for vacation, and I was hoping to update before then to see if my system is affected. I hope not. Too much of a hassle. Not worth all the worries and headaches.

I think you need this update to play never games that use the new dvd discs that MS is making.

aawwwwww jooooeeee! didn't know you cared sooo muuccch! but seriously all i did was tell them what happened and my shipping label came pronto.

they even did follow up calls to update me about the whereabouts of my console, they called every other day until i got my console back. the only problem i had was i had to recover my gamertag through xbl and that caused me to lose quite a few game saves but that's about it.

I did the update hoping it would kill my system, but it didn't. Darn.
