At least 107 people were killed and 34 injured in southwest China after a big earthquake hit Sichuan province, the official Xinhua news agency said.

It said around 900 students had been buried in a high school in Juyuan Township, Dujiangyan City, also in Sichuan.

Five children were killed in the 7.8 magnitude earthquake, causing buildings to sway and residents to rush out into the streets.
