have you guys seen the new info for PS3? its pretty crazy what they want to do with PS3..
-the PS3 microprocessing unit will be 200 times faster than the current video gaming state of the art.. and it'll cost them $400 million to make it.
-"The first concerns the Broadband Navigator and the way that it will be the true guts of the PlayStation format in the future. The second is that the power of future hardware means all previous standards (PS One, PS2, etc.) can be easily emulated in software.
He comments by way of example that "in technology far beyond the current Pentium 4, the PS2 format could be run on Intel's processor with emulation." Based on this and some of his other comments, it sounds like the future strategy is that beyond CDs and DVDs, the network will be the delivery method for everything. The technology will be so advanced that you'll be able to emulate just about anything and everything. And that this new format, whether you call it PS3 or whatever is not necessarily a console...it's the Broadband Navigation thingy, and it can be built into all kinds of devices. "I'm not interested in worldwide webs at all," he said. "Those are not broadband. You need a brand new software-based platform."
Could he be telling us that what we think of as a "console" is soon to be a thing of the past? Well, he went on to say, "in that future, there would be no such thing as PS3. No particular boxes called PS3, or no particular format called PS3. The medium for PS One was CD-ROMs. Medium for PS2 is DVDs. But once you get connected to the Internet, there's no boundaries based on physical constraint. The Internet is the medium. In the world of the Internet and, unlike CDs or DVDs, there's no sense of capacity. And it will continue to evolve."
So when is all this supposed to start happening? It's currently penciled in for 2005. "

Are you sure it's only 400 million? 'Cause I remember thats how much they supposedly spent on the PS2. And that they're planning on spending a several billion dollers on the PS3. And now you might be going, how can Sony afford that much. Well, Sony isn't the only one working on it. IBM and Toshiba are both co-creating it. But it will be realesed as a Sony product, like the last two.
...And about a month ago, at IBM they just clocked a computer at 110 GH! Now thats pretty high. Though the PS3 probably won't need(that would also raise it's price by a lot) that much speed, but I think it's pretty asured that the PS3 will be fast.
And yes, putting in the PS1/2 emulaters should be pretty cheap, maybe not easy. I remember hearing that Nintendo only spends about 2 dollers for the GB parts for the GBA.
The Cell technology is supposed to go far beyond anything NVidia will have at that time. So time will tell. And you can tell by it's name, the chip will allow all things to work in one unison, like a real cell. And Panasonic and Sony both came out disks a while ago(maybe it was only Panasonic, but Sony might use it for there console), that is able to hold 27-30 gigabytes of information. Plus it's really hard to scratch, and virtually impossibe to burn.
The Cell technology's deadline is 2005, but the actual console might come out later.
And the PS4 and after will be based on Biotechnology. Not sure what they mean by that though.
If PS3 does turn out really great, and it would be just to dominant in the console war for any one eles to enter. This might be the last console before we head into VR! I'm pretty sure thats where gaming will eventually end up.
-Your thoughts?

they just said that PS3 wont use any cd or dvd but instead it'll use the network..so i dont think they'll be needing that 30-40gb disk..but that would be cool though..=)
-as for the $400 mil. price. i think thats only for the microprocessing unit alone and not for the whole PS3..=)

That's alot of bullshit. First of all, Sony are marketeers. Basing your console on high access internet connections will probably give you about 5% market penetration of what the ps2 is doing now (maybe 10% in 2004). For small regions like japan, where experimenting with all sorts of crazy hardware is common, it might work (although not alot of japs own broadband).
But for regular regions like europe, where there will be lots of regular broadband like dsl and cable, no way. I'm sorry, but 'streaming' game content on my l33t 256kB connection isn't going to work. Besides, when people buy a game, they want to physically own that game, not pay-per-minute. It's like playing arcade, at home. That's obviously a big no-no if you studied marketing.
Consoles are supposed to be just that, consoles. Playing games you bought, at home.

You know, they could put all the NES, SNES, Genesis or any other old systems games, all on one disk! That would single handedly be one of the best selling game(s) ever.
...True, making the PS3 all online might be a bad idea. Because not everyone will be ready for it. Sony said there online plans will only support Broadband when DC went online. Because they thought that more people will have broadband by now. But the numbers are still about the same. Thats why the PS2 will support dial-ups, but with drawbacks. I wonder how they will pull it off with the PS3.
And if they will release the console in 2005-2006, that would be a bad idea. Even now the PS2 is always first on the charts. And if the PS3 came out, it will mean PS2's death. And it won't be able to reach it's prime. They should take there time and perfect it. And only release it when the PS2 starts doing really bad.

SUICIDE! Pure commercial suicide. Sony should stay as far away from this idea as possible. It would be the end of alot of what I love about gaming. It's the same thing with VOD (Video on demand). When I buy something, I want something physical. How lame would it be to shell out $50 for a game you can't take to your friends house?! Screw that, I want a black box with a Sony logo sitting next to a stack of game cases. Plain and simple.

There will probably be game disks, just without the entire game on it. It would be hard to be backwards compatible if it couldn't read discs, so that probably would be included. But I agree, I can't see the world being ready for an online only console in 2005, or at least until 2010.

If I can't hold the game in my grubby hands, they can keep them. The way online gaming is being shoved down our throats is more than a little disturbing.
ok, here it goes...
- of course it won't be online only, they just say they want online to be the primary way to get content
- nobody more that sony could dream of a online-cell-world, as long as they keep their part of the server/main power it means no piracy! no piracy means that they finally can sell their numeric property by single "rent' download and/or complete HD sell.
- i don't have any number but i believe Sony is one of the biggest movie producer in the world, they own a bunch of company. Now imagine if they rent/sell the 'dvd' directly to you? no media cost and no middleman (only pay for publicity/hype), i could still be paying 4.50 for a rent game or movie but they'll cash the entire price compare from now they only have a minim share of that 4.50. Now imagine licensing to others... $$$ you could rent the movie, buy the movie stereo or 5.1 or dts or with/without bonus materials, trailers... This is what we call PULL media :)
- now music, Sony is also one of the biggest music company in the world... with the same way they secure theirs pipes content they now sell their music, a all new feild of opportunity here, you could buy a single song, 4 or a complete album, again in stereo, SACD or 5.1 if available. why not the god damm music video while we're here!!
- now back to our turf, videogames... well you begin to understand why they call this one the trojan horse, cuz it's us gamer that'll make them invincible, with this business plan you can download demo anf if you like it download the game (almost like on a PC where you can download a demo, and if you like the game, download it from warez!!). We could finally see some episodic games where you buy level by level, tired after level 6? than change game, not tired after 6 months of play? keep on paying (FFXI+, EQ, ++). and what about extra skins? extra cars? extra levels? updated rosters?
- theres more, what about magazines? i'll admit that now that the Official Playstation Magazine is on DVD i can't get enough!! imagine downloading it every month? strategy guide? check. porn mag? check.
- console piracy can only be achive if you can trick the machine into thinking it's legit, but what if every 10sec it checks with the server? all this secure download is then possible. even the hard drive where you keep your games and save games could be on the server, try copying that now!!
- and now the icing on the cake, all this pass by the ISP! (bring on the DOCOMO, AOL, SYMPATICO... why do you think they want in on the deal now that you pay per download?? 3 words : total world domination
are you still wondering why M$ has entered the Console business at all?
No i'm not a PR person for Sony, i just have to much time to think :)

They are getting out of control.....!
And to think that the PS9 ad was a joke.... well i'm not laughing anymore...

I remember the PS9 commercial. I didn't know what to really think about it. I mean the PS9 probably won't come out for another 20 years or something.
...Pfk brought up some good points. The way Sony is headed, it does kind of look like world domination. The Entertainment world anyway. Sony is just about every where these days. They even bought 1% of Real industries lately. Secruing something for there online plans?
And I was reading at the magicbox, that they would use the network for endless processing power. Now if the PS3 specs will never be the same, and can be improved. Then why would they need to make PS4 and so on.
And what do they mean by using biotechnolgy for the PS4 and after? Does it mean the future consoles will be alive or something?

Considering Sony plan to release specific details about the PS3 in 2005, its safe to assume the console will probably hit the streets in 2006. Who knows what the world will look like in 4 years? 4 years ago most of us didn't even have broadband and were slowly chugging along with analog modems at schorching speeds of 3ks. I know I was. :p
Technology grows exponentially, and Sony is probably jsut a few years ahead in the thinking. While I do seriously doubt they will offer "streaming games" for the ps3, I wouldnt be surprised that it is somehow network based to combat piracy. For example, you buy your game in the shop, and the DVD has a unique authorization ID embedded in the disc. You stick your game into your console, the console reads the ID and connects to the closest Sony server to authorize the code, and allows you to play the game.
Of course, all it will take is HK hackers to figure a way to skip te code-checking, and you have a modded, cracked PS console again, but well... that's all just speculation. :)

For some reason I don't think their gonna make a console that big. Even if it is just the prototype...

i think your talking about the GScube.. i read long time ago (probably 6-8 months ago) that sony made a prototype called GS cube, they even showed a picture of it. it looks pretty big and heavy, they said that the GScube contain i think if i remember correcty that it has 16EmotionEngine built into it. they said that the graphics is 3x better than Shrek the movie..in the article, they also said that they are experimenting on how to make the GScube smaller, so that maybe they can use it for PS3..=) ama try to look for the magazine bout this. i think its from a PSM magazine..

Are you guy's talking about the picture where the thing had four legs? I remember thinking of a spider or something when I first saw it. It did look really big, but not appealing.
