Dear seasoned reviewers, like Greg Miller of IGN (pictured and whose work back at the Columbia Tribune we covered), you're reviewing Lair wrong -- according to Sony. Miller, and probably many other reviewers, received their copies today of the "Lair Reviewer's Guide" so that they might go back and say, "Yes Sony, we totally don't know how to play video games, thank you! Thank you so much for showing us the light on how to play these ... things. We will now go back and redo our scores with the wealth of information we have been given."

We probably couldn't say it better than Tycho of Penny Arcade when he wrote what every video game professional with half a brain should think, "For my part, I don't give a good Goddamn if someone has trained themselves to eat shit and like it. The game is not challenging, it's difficult to play, and it's taken many years but I'm ready to begin making this distinction." Controls shouldn't need an explanation (or a video like the not-official one after the break), innovation can be intuitive if it's done right. Yeah, you can explain what the buttons should do, but when professionals can't use the controls properly, and they're trying to review the game for a general video game enthusiast -- that's a problem.

The fact that Sony and Factor 5 had to send out a packet telling reviewers how to play the game a week after the fact is so painfully tragic that it's funny. Oh, and just to be totally clear, there are typically "fact sheets" bundled with games and even follow-up info emails sometimes, but this "Lair Reviewer's Guide" goes well beyond that with "gameplay advice." Insulting with just a hint of desperation is what the "Lair Reviewer's Guide" is.

There is nothing I can say to make this any funnier.

Problem with "pro" reviwers is there payed to nitpick, something most gamers don't do. Not just with Lair but with alot of games.

or you could say they are paid to give an honest opinion of a game, something a lot of gamers do not do after they have paid the RRP for it.

When almost every reviewer, even the offical fanboy mags say the controls are broken on a game, it kinda suggests they are not nit picking but right.

And when games cost so much to buy and make now a days the reviewers should nit pick, there are no excuses for broken controls in any game. Why should developers be allowed to get away with palming of poor quality, sub standard software to the customers?

They shouldn't and the more supposed AAA titles that end up crap are reported to be as bad and bomb as they deserve, then just perhaps developers might start to increase the quality of software and stop palming off sub standard shit to people.

But sadly they probebly won't as there are alway nimrods that will go out and buy the stuff just for something to play as they have nothing better to do in there spare time.

Personally I wouldn't like the comment on the controls to much has I haven't played it yet though judging from Rogue Squadron the problem will happen when you get in a real tight spot but 80% of time will be fine.

Here is a video showing how you shouldn't play lair, and shows you how to play it. Take it easy, and not jerk the controller all over the place, and the dragon controls just fine. Remember it's not a jet your controlling either.

well i have played it so i will comment, and to be honest the reviews have been spot on . the controls are broken and the frame rate v/poor indeed. if they had let you play without sixaxis control it may have been OK .. but as it stands its a stinker. the controls simply do ot work as they should. after playing i can fully understand why there is no demo on PSN thats for sure ..

and the penny-arcade got it spot on whern it comes to people defending bad/broken game mechanics

There are some who derive a kind of perverse superiority from their mastery of the game's ambiguous mechanics. For my part, I don't give a good Goddamn if someone has trained themselves to eat shit and like it

It's all the matter of practice I remember on the Wii playing Wii Sports and Red Steel for the first time it wasn't pretty but it got easier with time. I same applies here I think. My copy should turn up from America this week so I'll find out then I guess.

and I've played it. It doesn't take a genius to find out how to work it. I have a hard time to understand why reviewers are having so much problem with it. Practice or no practice, as you can see from the youtube video, the basic mechanic isn't extreme difficult. It's not the best you are ever going ot play. But, giving it 4 out of 10 is just plenty unfair. A 7 would be right, imo.

7 does not equal average.

From the youtube video, its clear the game isnt responsive. You have to execute the motion and then wait to see if it happens on screen (wich it will after around 2-3 seconds). That not responsive at all...its like you can only glide, not fully controling the flight.
With that said it all looks pretty silly. The speed boost, the turn around move off screen...it all makes it seem like a chore to play besides looking extremely silly to whoever watches you play... also careful not to hit something or someone with it!
