I don't have a PS3 but it seems like Sony is emulating PS2 and PS1 games on the PS3 is some weird way that makes the games look worse when played on the PS3.

Basically, when playing games in 480p on the PS3, they look like 480i games on the PS2, and when played in 480i on the PS3, they look like PS1 games...

The video shows the flaw nicely with the FFX video. Not sure if Sony has addressed the problem or when they'll fix it. But since it seems like most news media are keeping quite on the subject I think many people don't know about the problem.

Edit - The problem seems to only occur with games that display less than 640 horizontal lines. Their is apparently a problem with the scaler when emulating these games, so the screen stretches the games to fit the default resolution size for the PS3 emulator. When you run these games in progressive scan, the problem goes away but it doesn't look at good when played on the PS2.

RR5 seems fine because of it's native resolution size

Oh that's just great. What am I gonna do now with the PS2 games I just bought that I intend to play on the PS3 in the future? I don't want to get a PS2, it was the whole point I skipped the PS2 years ago: to have both PS2 and PS3 games and play them on one system and not waste the money to buy two. I've been very patient with this plan. I just hope this problem gets fixed eventually.

lol thats where i got the idea from.

and the army of people in Japan walking into stores pretending to be 360 reps ... LOL ... so they can look at Blue Dragon with out getting cuss'd by their peers for looking at a 360.

Just for clarification, PS2 games that have 480p play fine on the PS3, but for games that are only in 480i, it's going to stretch the image. So not all PS2 games are affected.

Fact is none of them should be affected if its supposed to emulate the PS2. Clearly it doesnt.

What does Nintendo have to do with anything? The Wii is only backwards compatible with the Gamecube, nothing else. And that's because it IS a Gamecube, and nothing else.

That is not how I remember Ico, because the picture above is just horrible. But whatever the cause, Sony should be able to fix it.

I keep reading them, but honestly, I don't know what the hell is 480, 1080, sometimes with an "i" or a "p." The TV I use is more than a decade old, no special sound system attached, and I'm still quite satisfied with it. :)

Maybe...its attentional. YEAH! To make people think Ps2 games are horribly ugly when looking at Ps3 games. All in a attempt to make the Ps3 seems like a graphics powerhouse. When it really may be no more then a 360!...ok I got nothing.

480/1080 are resolutions for the screens and the I is interlace and P is progressive.

480 is what you have now for TV and 1080 is basically just widescreen. People who know more will correct me if I'm wrong.

i = interlaced
p = progressive

The difference between the two is how both show the frames of an image. In interlaced, you only get half the lines per frame, while progressive shows all the lines of a image in one frame. Interlaced works by showing one half of the image during one frame, and the next half in the next frame.

480i refers to 480 vertical lines interlaced. This is the image resolution for all old TV sets.

480p was introduced as progressive scan, where with component cables you could play DVD movies and games in 480p.

Any resolution higher than 480p is considered HD.

You have 720p, 1080i, and 1080p as your HD resolutions.

The image qaulity for 1080i and 720p is not that much different, but I believe 720p is higher qaulity to due the nature of p.

1080p is the highest image qaulity and you'll need HDMI cables to get that resolution, and of course a TV that displays in 1080p. This is the resolution both HD-DVDs and BluRay movies are played in.

So basically, the scale of image qaulity goes

SDTV - 480i
EDTV - 480p
HDTV - 1080i, 720p, 1080p

Well, this is only a problem for those that wanna be smartasses and sell their PS1&PS2 and keep the PS3. In all honesty, backwards compatability is overrated and useless. Lets just get over it and keep your consoles for the classic quality.

I agree. BC is a nice feature to have but its never a selling point to me.

I disagree, the 360 doesn't have BC, which just sucks, I don't own an Xbox, but I stupidly bought Shenmue 2 thinking that Microsoft would implement some good BC on the 360, so I have no choice but to consider buying the original Xbox, which is becoming quite hard to find since wal mart and all the other stores don't stock them anymore.

i thiink its coz he is pissed at Nintendo more durable hardware because he picked up a 2nd hand GameBoy Color from Ebay and it did not work as expected based on the description..

you might not have to soon.

But just so you know, if you can find a import ver. of Shenmue 2 for the Dreamcast, it comes with japanese voices /Eng subtitles, I like that ver. a lot better. :) All you need is a action replay for the dreamcast and it plays all imports.

i agree about the shenmue 2, i liked the dc version (jap dub, eng sub) better than the xb version.
