Ace Combat 5, New Ridge Racer Discussed
Namco drops some hints...
October 30, 2002 - Two new projects from Namco, Ace Combat 5 and a new Ridge Racer game, were discussed during the developer's exhibition at the Tokyo International CG Festival yesterday. Kazutoki Kono, art director of Ace Combat 4, stated that a team called "Project Aces" was working on a sequel for release at an unannounced date, while MotoGP producer Isao Nakamura confirmed that new details on the successor to the popular Ridge Racer franchise would be released in the summer of 2003.

Neither of these announcements are quite entirely new -- Namco confirmed plans for an online flight shooting game (presumably in the Ace Combat series) some time ago, and a teaser trailer for the new Ridge Racer was shown at E3. However, it's encouraging to see the projects moving forward, and we hope to bring you more news on both games soon.

Ha ha Ace Combat series rulez. I just bought Ace Combat 4 for about $15 a month ago. Also, isn't the team making Ace Combat games, is working with Nintendo on Star Fox Armada? I can't wait to see what the new Star Fox look like. If they are making an asteroid belt stage, take notes from Rouge Leader stage Prisoner of the Maw level or the asteroid stage (secret level) and keeps them rock coming. :P

I've been a big fan of the Air Combat/Ace Combat series for a long time, but I must say AC4 was fantastic and probably one of the most enjoyable games I've played on PS2. Sure, it isn't the hardest game, but it was so satisfying to play that it didn't matter. I'd don't think AC4 will every be a game I wouldn't want handy just to play a few missions of on a rainy day.

I alos heard about Namco developing an online flight game, but in some ways I hope the next Ace Combat games is BOTH online and offline because i'd hate to lose out on the ability to just pop the game in and play single player. I also hope that they can squeeze out a bit more resolution of the maps so that when you fly closer the ground still looks as good as it does at a few thousand feet.

Too bad the PS2 Broadband is not doing well at all in Japan, FFXI is still struggling with just 130,000 subscribers.

How is the PS2 Network adapter doing in here?

That's not too bad, since Square only released less than 250k copies of FFXI.

Dude, Ace Combat 4 was the best Ace Combat game. The story in Ace Combat 3 confused the hell out of me. And I don't like the idea of me being a computer generated AI... Not to mention the missions in 4 were more varied and the story was so bitter sweet.

WE NEED AN ANIME BASED ON ACE COMBAT 4, NAMCO!!! Though... the new Macross anime should suit me just fine.

If you're referring to the Japanese AC3, that game has multiple story branches. The Cynthia-Fiona story arcs, and even the one where you get Rena's ending, are as bittersweet as they come. Presonally, I like AC3's storyline the best. Lots of intrigue, surprises, shocks, and awesome fighters... Oh, and lots of gorgeous anime cutscenes, too :D AC04's story seemed pretty straightforward in comparison.

AC4 placed you into a war. It made you feel like you're part of something. Sure, it was straight forward, but it was touching.

AC3 made me wonder just exactly why I was a pilot at all.

The animation scenes were nice, but AC4 proved that you could pull emotion with a minimal amount of animation. The sound (music, effects, etc.) was much better too, IMO. And the missions were better too.

Either way, at least we agree the ACE COMBAT series is good.

AC3 had a lot of character development in it (as much character development as this genre allows, at least). With the branching storylines, the animation cutscenes, the voice acting, the in-between missions e-mail/vidphone messages, not to mention the in-flight (one-sided) dialogue, I actually got to know and care for my wingmen in AC3. I was actually torn over what to do in the escort mission when I had to choose between saving either Fiona or Erich.

This isn't to say that AC04 is not good. It is. In fact, it's effin' great! :) But personally, AC3 will always have the #1 spot in my heart.

Eh... I'd give more props to AC3 if I had understood it... I just played it because I heard the U.S. version was missing so much.

I sure hope Ace Combat 5 continues with the emphasis on story. Maybe adding a branching storyline again would be fun. As long as the U.S. version gets it too.

And AC4's english voice-acting was SUPERB.
