April 22, 2002 - It's hard to make the claim that any game is truly better than Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, which yes, had a lot of conversation, and did play a lot like a movie, but those are weaknesses that we can live with. With each new year, however, another developer comes along, and attempts to create something better, more fantastic, and over-the-top than the last year's best effort.
Ubi Soft's Splinter Cell is apparently on par to become one hell of a third-person action-adventure game, and some pundits are even willing to go so far as to day that it's even better than Hideo Kojima's masterpiece. How dare they!
But seriously, Ubi Soft today did confirm with IGNPS2 that Splinter Cell is indeed coming to PlayStation 2, after its Xbox and PC debut.
What do you think about this game? Do you think that it will be better than MGS2? Theres some pics of it in the Magicbox. But they're all for the Xbox version. Theres one coming for PC also.
...The only bad thing is that, we might not find out if it is better than MGS2 untill 2003.
what i don't understand is that they came back to announce the ps2 version but said nothing about the GC version, cuz theres gotta be one in production... we're talking ubisoft here!!
i guess they got bombarded by emails "and about ps2? and about ps2?" they had to talk but no one asked about a GC version?? maybe thay 'wait and see' with the GC
and yes it is supposed to be something, but tagging it a mgs2 killer is only for hype, since xbox need something like that and we haven't heard from MGSX in a long time... it could backfire !!

It is coming to GameCube!
Here is the full press:
Ubi Soft Entertainment unveiled today the creation of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, introducing a brand new genre in the Tom Clancy line-up. Taking place in the realistic, highly detailed geopolitical universe of Tom Clancy, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell is a third person stealth action game, featuring cyber-terrorism, shadow agencies, and covert operations. In the fall of 2002, Ubi Soft will debut this lone stealth action game worldwide on the Xbox video game system and then follow with the next generation platforms in 2003.
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell will grant players access to the highest echelons of national security, where shadowy operatives have the freedom to do whatever it takes to safeguard America. In Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, the player controls Sam Fisher, a field operative of a secretive "black-ops" NSA sub-agency called Third Echelon. Sam Fisher is geared up to infiltrate high-security strongholds, seize critical intelligence, destroy threatening data and neutralize the enemy - all without leaving a trace. Developed by Ubi Soft's Montreal Studio, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, is a unique experience that will have the player thinly skate on the fine line that separates fact from fiction.
"Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell is a really ambitious title that reaches unparalleled visual quality and innovative action packed game play thanks to Ubi Soft's highly modified version of the next generation Unreal 2 Engine", said Laurent Detoc, president of Ubi Soft Entertainment Inc. "We consider it to be one of our premiere games of the year."
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell will be seen for the first time at the Electronic Entertainment Expo this May in Los Angeles.

I never heard about the Gamecube version. But there sales will be a lot better if they made it for all the systems.
...Microsoft will most likely pay Ubisoft for them to have the best version of the game. Like they did to other games. They did it with Spiderman. They also had THPS2X. And Restless Dreams, and probably a couple of others

Hm, a no name company announces a no name game that NOBODY gives a damn about. In other news, the Xbox is shit.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure the company responsible for Rayman is going to produce the next MGS2 killer. Yep, that's extremely possible. Cause we all know that the Metal Gear fanchise was established on the PSX. Oh wait, no it wasn't, it started in the NES. It took the creator over a decade to realize his vision, and now some dumbass company out of nowhere claims to surpass that fanchise? Oh give me a break, I spit on this gutter trash "Splinter Cell".
i get your point grahf
the thing is, it's just been announce and we're always gonna remember it has 'the supposely mos kill', but is ti the press that tagged that or the PR people at Ubi???
like i said i could backfire big time!!
in my opinion when Ubi bought the tom clancy rights or whatever they knew they were gonna make lots of dough and then why port it left and right but not on the GC???
and don't tell me it's cuz it's a kid console, i know it is primarely but that's no reason not to release 'M' titles on it!!
i'm very surprised... must be cuz of the controller :D

About the GC.. im not sure, i'll ask my friend who's working on the game... but chance are that the reason why they won't port it to GC..welll,,,ahem.. they think it's a kid console!
Sorry if this is going to sound offensive to you, Bahamut, but here goes.
I highly doubt you work for Ubisoft for a very simple reason. Having worked int he games industry myself for 2 different companies as a localization technician and betatester, I know event he lowest schmuck in a games company like Ubi Soft would have to sign a Non-disclosure agreement. Also, as employees we were told not to talk about opinions the company may have, and your sweeping statement that Ubi may think the GC is a kiddie console might put the company in jeopardy if you really were an employee and speaking for them. So either:
A> You are in breach of confidentialy and your contract, meaning you will get fired as soon as your superiors find out about your post, or
B> You are high enough in the hierarchy not to require the signing of such a contract, being in charge of PR yourself. In which case you wouldnt need to "ask your friend working on the game" if there will be a GC port.
Now, that out of the way, I do highly doubt that Splinter Cell will be a MGS2 killer, for the very simple reason that they will be different games, and well, to be honest, MGS2 wasnt all that great gameplay wise. The best thing about MGS2 was the wacky story and the cutscenes; that is what kept me hooked, not the gameplay in itself which was rather rudimentary; hardly an evolution from MGS1.
Grahf: Hm, a no name company announces a no name game that NOBODY gives a damn about? Obviously you don't take your eyes off the console game market, as otherwise you would know the significance of the Tom Clancy franchise. Do a little research before you open your mouth without thinking.

Seska, which company do/did you work for? And are you still in the business? And what did you do? Because I'm thinking about going into the industry, so I'd like ask you a few questions.
...And for the kiddie image thing. I think the problem is that people confuse Nintendo with their consoles. I mean Nintendo does make kiddy-ish games. So people just think that all there other games are going to be like that. Thats how they got their image, IMO. Conkers Bad Fur Day is an exception.
Right now, it doesn't look like this might be the MGS2 killer. Some people in this thread made some good points.
I think Tomb Raider The Angel of Darkness will have a better change to become a MGS2 killer, now that the game has "borrowed" almost all the tactical espionage action elements from the MGS, plus a few of its own ideas. Not to mention Tomb Raider already has a huge fan base.

Wow, I can tell that you're a master of deductive thinking and perceptive reasoning. Yep, there's no doubt about it, your mind must be working mile a minute. Oh wait, no it's not, you're just pulling facts of your ass and twisting them to conform with your misguided ideas. Look genius, it doesn't matter if Bahamat works for Ubisoft or not, he can still say whatever he wants. This is the internet in case you don't know, and people are practically just faceless entities. How in pray tell does the nondisclosure clause apply to him if people don't know who he is? Surely someone who "claims" to work in the industry should've known this.
So the PR announcement from Ubisoft explicitly stating that this game is a third person shooter, with close resemblance to gameplay and graphic wise as MGS2, has nothing in common with MGS2? Wow, such ignorance. You're even worse than that babbling idiot, Onmitsu, you know that? At least he tried to be semi-intelligent. You on the other hand, one-upped him by completely ignoring to read the article, and making up facts in your mind, then drivel on and on like a moron.
Now why would you say MGS2 was not an evolution from MGS1? Do you even understand the concept of sequels. The creators weren't striving to creat a new game here, that would be ZOE, they just wanted build upon the original and improve on some aspects that were flawed in the original. What do you think Tony Hawk, Tomb Raider, all those Counter Strike clones have been doing all this time? God, I can tell that you're a real genius.
And since when did the Tom Clancy fanchise suddenly became so popular? Last I heard, the only people who cares about the fanchise are a bunch of PC FPS fanatics and possibly ranting maniacs like you.
Please, just crawl back under your bridge mister troll. Your goats miss you.

Grahf:
Oh, you amuse me. I think that to anyone who regularly reads these baords, its is painfully clear who is the troll.
You want facts? Here is a quote for you, it took me a whole (GASP!) minute to dig up from the net:
Rainbow Six?: Raven Shield is the sequel to the immensely popular Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six?: Rogue Spear, 2000 Action Game Of The Year, and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six?, 1999 Action Game Of The Year*. It will be the third game in the Rainbow Six line, which has sold more than 6.7 million copies worldwide.
Note that said sales do not include Ghost Recon, Desert Siege and don't even MENTION the upcoming Splinter Cell title. Unknown franchise indeed.
You want a link for that? Knock yourself out:
www.raven-shield.com
That is an official site from the publishing company itself, in case you are in doubt.
As for who is who on the net - yes, we all have the right to say what we want, and I have done so in this post, and in my reply to Bahamut. What I find amusing is how you find any excuse to lash out at anybody for the most banal reasons.
How do I know how the industry works? I worked as a localization technician for Square-Europe (do you even KNOW what that is?) and as an Online Community admin under contract for Sega. Yes, I could have chosen to take an anonymous identity as I am now, and post any crap I want about my employers, but my boss finding out about it by reading through online community boards and suspecting his employees, is COUNTER PRODUCTIVE for a good working envioronment. But I am sure you know better.
Your trollish mind probably did not even GRASP that in a way, I was agreeing with your post - Splinter Cell is NOT a MGS Killer, as they are different GAMES.
A game nobody cares about, eh? I am sure 6.7 million people in the world will disagree with you.
And feel free to flame me away some more. Each post only confirms what most people already know about your intelligence.

The Rainbow Six series may be very popular in US, but it does not have any fans in Japan, most people never even heard of the game there.
A mgs2 killer ??..How many times did we heard that?? It might come close but naaaaaah i don't think so !!!! Some things you just can't beat !!

People people people... Grahf relax a little bit maaan. You don't have to be so upset about that !
First: I do work at Ubi Soft montreal. I explain myself to Seska as for why I can talk about Splinter Cell even trough I'm working for Ubi Soft (sure I got limitation, but i can sure post my opinion about their games).
As for this thing.... Splinter Cell being the "the killer of Metal Gear." I don't believe in that crap.... not even those who's working on the game believe that. This is a maketing thing (compare with the best game on the market so we can sell more.)
Splinter Cell is more of a action oriented game. Unlike Metal Gear 2 who's bare ressemblance to a movie script.
Rainbow Six never was a reknown game in Japan...True to that.
That also explain as for why UbiSoft did the game for X-box knowing this is a US maket oriented game
At last, I've been able to check out the game a little bit. The game does have potential and will sure make a lot of X-box owner happy. This is not Metal Gear... This is not a Hideo Kojima game. -.- ....
